When is the best time to travel to Tarifa?
One thing nobody tells you beforehand: in Tarifa it is almost always windy. That is not a drawback but the character of the place, and it is why the surfers are here.
The upside is considerable in summer. While the inland cities push past thirty-five degrees, this coast stays comfortable thanks to the constant sea breeze, which makes it one of the few Andalusian destinations that works in the height of the season.
If you want days genuinely still enough to lie on a towel, late spring and early autumn are the safer bet. Whenever you come, pack a windbreaker, even in July.
Where two seas and two continents meet
Tarifa sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, precisely where the Atlantic becomes the Mediterranean. On one side of the peninsula the water is rough and cool, on the other calm and warmer.
It is one of the few places where a single view takes in two seas and two continents. Dolphins live in the strait, whales pass through, and in autumn thousands of migrating birds cross overhead toward Africa.
Spend a few days here and you understand why the Moors landed at this exact point in 711. The entire history of Andalusia begins on this stretch of coast.
