Málaga, the sunny city of Spain’s Costa del Sol, is a city that captures your heart with its charm. From historical monuments to world-class art and lovely beaches. This city has it all. Whether you are a culture junkie, love relaxing on the beach, or just want a nice city break, Málaga offers the perfect setting.
1. Explore the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle
When visiting Málaga, you can’t miss the spectacular Alcazaba. Located high above the city, this 11th-century Moorish fortress almost feels like stepping back in time. As you stroll through the lush gardens and over the ancient walls, it’s easy to imagine what life was like hundreds of years ago. The view from the top is breathtaking. You can see the whole city, the port and the Mediterranean shining under the sun.
Walk a little further up (or take the bus, you can do that too) to Gibralfaro Castle for even more beautiful views. This castle is perfect for a quiet walk and offers great panoramic views over Málaga. Tip: bring your camera because you’ll definitely want to capture these views.
2. Visit the Picasso Museum Málaga
Did you know that Málaga is the hometown of world-famous artist Pablo Picasso? Art lovers will enjoy the Picasso Museum, where more than 200 works by this master can be admired. From paintings and sketches to sculptures and ceramics, here you get a great overview of his impressive career.
The museum is located in a beautifully restored palace in the heart of the city. So whether you are a seasoned art connoisseur or just curious about Picasso, this museum is an absolute must-visit.
3. The beautiful Cathedral of Málaga ‘La Manquita’
After your cultural stop at Picasso, walk on to Málaga’s imposing Cathedral, also affectionately called ‘La Manquita’ (the one-armed lady). The cathedral was given this nickname because one of its towers was never completed. But trust us, this incomplete beauty does nothing to change that. Inside, you will find impressive Baroque and Renaissance details, beautiful stained-glass windows and impressive works of art. For the adventurous ladies, there is the option of climbing the tower. Yes, that means a little sweat, but the view over the city makes up for everything.
4. Relax on Playa de la Malagueta
No visit to Málaga is complete without a day at the beach. And what could be better than the fine Playa de la Malagueta? Located just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre, this popular city beach is the perfect place to relax after a morning of sightseeing.
Stretch out on the golden sand, take a dip in the cool water and soak up the sun. Did you get hungry? No worries! Along the beach you will find cosy chiringuitos (beach bars) where you can enjoy delicious local dishes. Order a plate of espetos (roasted sardines) and a refreshing cocktail, after all, you are on holiday.
5. Admire Andalusian art at the Museo Carmen Thyssen
For those who can’t get enough of art, there is also the Museo Carmen Thyssen. This museum pays homage to Andalusian and Spanish art from the 19th century and is housed in a beautiful palace in the old city centre. The collection includes works depicting everyday life in Andalusia – from colourful markets to beautiful landscapes. The museum is not too big, so it is perfect for a leisurely afternoon of culture sniffing without being overwhelming.
